Carol Marshall was born and raised in Madison and raised her family in the Capitol City. Like many who came to love the sport of ice hockey, she didn’t play youth or even high school hockey, but her passion for the game showed through in all she did over five decades to help the sport grow. Her six children played youth hockey and were involved in multiple sports including baseball, volleyball, basketball and softball (a rite of passage for her daughters).Marshall helped start the South Side Association, Westmorland and the Madison Capitols. She served as President of South Side and was also a member of the Dane County Hockey Board. She was the first female member of the WAHA Board of Directors. Two of her sons played hockey at UW-Stevens Point and she served as a member of the Stevens Point Blue Line Club. Marshall was also a founding member of the original UW Blueline Club. She is a recipient of the Mell Ross Distinguished Service and Gramps O’Sheridan award for Extraordinary Service given out by the UW Hockey Program. She was inducted into the Madison Capitols Hall of Fame several years ago. Marshall has been heavily involved at St. James Catholic Church and served on many church committees, cooking school and funeral lunches, helped run festivals and the schools sport teams. Marshall ran her own athletic lettering business for more than 35 years out of her home. Marshall is a long-time supporter of UW Badger Hockey. For decades she mended socks and uniforms for UW hockey and football players. She wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and helped care for softball and baseball fields and did anything and everything necessary to help kids play sports. She touched countless athletes in all sports throughout this time. Marshall was named Olympian of the Year in the 1990’s by the Madison Service Clubs and received the Friend of Sport award from the Madison Area Sports Hall of Fame. Carol Marshall and her husband Jack raised their own six kids: John, Mary, Jim, Michelle, Jeff and Joel. She fostered a love for the game of ice hockey and passed on her love of all sports, encouraging and enabling countless youngsters, including 13 grandchildren. |
